MHD instability in cylindric Taylor-Couette flow
The linear marginal instability of an axisymmetric MHD Taylor-Couette flow of infinite vertical extension is considered. For flows with a resting outer cylinder there is a well-known characteristic Reynolds number even without magnetic field but for sufficiently weak magnetic fields there are solutions with smaller Reynolds numbers so that a characteristic minimum exists. The minimum only exist...

We have conducted a numerical studv of spherical Couette Vlow -the flow between differentiallv rotatin~ concentric spheres. When the qa D ratio o{(R2-RI)/RI (where R 1 and R 2 are the radii of the inner and outer spheres) is small, the flow near the e~uator resembles that between cylinders, the classic Tavlor-Couette ~roblem. As in Tavlor-Couette flow, when the angular momentum gradient, measur...
متن کاملHelical magnetorotational instability in magnetized Taylor-Couette flow.
Hollerbach and Rüdiger have reported a new type of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in magnetized Taylor-Couette flow in the presence of combined axial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The salient advantage of this "helical" MRI (HMRI) is that marginal instability occurs at arbitrarily low magnetic Reynolds and Lundquist numbers, suggesting that HMRI might be easier to realize than standard MR...
متن کاملStratorotational instability in Taylor - Couette flow heated from above
We investigate the instability and nonlinear saturation of temperature-stratified Taylor-Couette flows in a finite height cylindrical gap and calculate angular-momentum transport in the nonlinear regime. The model is based on an incompressible fluid in Boussinesq approximation with a positive axial temperature gradient applied. While both ingredients themselfs, the differential rotation as well...
متن کاملComment on "Helical magnetorotational instability in magnetized Taylor-Couette flow".
Liu [Phys. Rev. E 74, 056302 (2006)] have presented a WKB analysis of the helical magnetorotational instability (HMRI), and claim that it does not exist for Keplerian rotation profiles. We show that, if radial boundary conditions are included, the HMRI can exist even for rotation profiles as flat as Keplerian, provided only that at least one of the boundaries is sufficiently conducting.
